A card balance can cover the listed price and still fail because the merchant asks the issuer to reserve a larger amount temporarily. That reserve is called a preauthorization.
Where larger holds are common
- Hotels and car rentals that allow for incidentals.
- Fuel pumps that reserve an estimated maximum before pumping.
- Restaurants or delivery services that allow room for a tip.
- Foreign-currency purchases where the final converted amount can move.
Leave a balance cushion
Use the card where the final amount is known and keep some room above the purchase total. If the card supports billing-address registration, make sure checkout uses the same details.
Split payments are not universal
Some shops let you pay part with the prepaid balance and the rest another way; many online checkouts do not. Keep the cart total below the usable balance when split tender is unavailable.
